This story is about a sixteen year old, who name is kit Tyler, and she is on this ship that is bringing her to America from Barbados. She has never been to America before, so she is very excited about the trip. Mrs.Eaton, who has been there for Kit is getting off the ship alone the way, and Kit gets upset. After Kit returns back to the ship, she continue her ride up Wethersfield, where her aunt lives.

When Matthew leaves for work, Rachel takes some cornbread to a needy neighbor,and the three cousins are lefte alone at the house. Kit goes to the trunk and gives all her cousins a garment. Judith looks at the dress what Kit gives her and wonders how William will react, when he sees her at prayer meeting. Rachel comes back home to watch the girls try on the clothes. She is very worried about the work that is not being done around the house. Matthew comes home early from work and is very angry about what is going on. He made the girls return all the clothes back to Kit, and thhe girls are disappointed.

The Wood family goes to prayer meeting, and Kit is expected to go with them, even though she doesn't want to. Everybody in the community is expected to go to the meeting. Wethersfield is a puritan community and has norms that have to be abided by all. Matthew is angry by the clothes that Kit is wearing. He feels that she can't go to the meeting in the clothes that she has on. Rachel comes to tell Matthew that maybe the members of the congregation will understand that Kit has not had time to shop for any clothes.

The Assembly handed out new concessions of land grants, and Matthew thinks that its a great idea because it will prevent th king from giving land to whomever he wants.

Rachel and Mercy makes Kit a calico dress, so she want ruin her good clothes while working. Kit now wears the same clothing as the other girls. When the girls come to the Great Meadow, the beauty of the green fields stuns Kit. Judith tells Kit that the soil is fertile there, but no one lives there because in the spring, it always floods.

When she gets there, a group young boys are taunting the men, and one kid throws an apple at Nat's head. Kit tries to talk to Nat, but he tells her to leave the stock.
